Grit bins in your area

While the days are beginning to get longer and spring is edging closer, we may yet still experience some extremely cold weather which may result in frost, ice and snow.

Do you know about the grit bins in your area?

They are often bright yellow and placed by your local council in areas that may not be on main roads. Typically, they can be found on sharp bends, junctions and steep hills, and in residential areas where there may be a higher proportion of elderly people.

The grit boxes contain a mixture of salt and grit to be spread to help prevent ice on roads and pavements, to help reduce the risk of accidents for cars and pedestrians.

You can locate your nearest grit bin by checking your local council’s website, or by contacting them.

If cold weather and ice strikes and you are able to safely get to your grit bin to help your local community then remember to always use a shovel and wear gloves. If you have elderly or less able neighbours, it helps to make the pavements safe and can make getting out onto the main roads safer for any cars.

If your grit bin is empty, then contact your local council to fill it. If you don’t have a grit bin in your area but think it would be beneficial then you can also raise this with your local council.
