Managing increased rainfall in your garden

At this time of year, we often experience increased levels of rainfall, leading to more gardens becoming waterlogged. If you live in a newly built home, it is crucial to report any flooding issues within the first 12 months so the developer can address them before the defect’s liability period expires.

For existing homes, some customers find drainage problems during periods of wet weather. However, with the rising water table, traditional drainage solutions may not always work effectively, as excess water has limited places to disperse.

Here are some simple things you could do to in your garden to avoid it becoming waterlogged:

  • Plant shrubs and small hedges — they help soak up water and keep the soil healthy
  • Add gravel or stones to create natural drainage areas where water can soak away
  • Try to avoid using lots of AstroTurf or paving slabs — these hard surfaces stop water draining and can cause flooding in your garden or nearby
  • Use absorbent materials like bark chippings or mulch to help stop water building up
  • Pick plants that love wet conditions — they’ll help keep your garden looking great, even in heavy rain.
