Going away over the festive period?

If you’re planning a trip away or will be away visiting family and friends over Christmas it’s important you take a few quick and simple steps to keep your home as safe as possible:

-        If your neighbours will be staying home and you know them well, you can ask them to keep an eye on your home whilst you’re away

-        If you’re expecting parcels whilst you’re away, then either rebook for when you’re home and rearrange the delivery address to avoid a build-up of post on your doorstep

-        Secure your doors and windows, making sure they are completely shut and locked

-        Unplug all non-essential electronics to protect them from power surges and save on energy costs. This also reduces the risk of electrical fires

-        Make sure you’ve not left any valuables visible from the windows

-        Review your home insurance policy to ensure it covers theft and damage while you’re away. This can provide peace of mind in case the worst happens

-        Use smart lighting – smart lighting can make it look like someone is home even when you’re not. You can set timers for your lights to turn on and off at different times, or use smart bulbs that you can control remotely via an app.

If you’re a leaseholder or shared owner please remember if you’re going away for more than 28 days you are required to have an inspection carried out on your home.
